German Shepherds are a popular breed of dog in the Herding Group. They currently rank as the second most popular dog in the U.S. according to the AKC, outranked only by the Labrador Retriever. Although they belong in the Herding Group, they are also commonly used among the police force to sniff out dangerous chemicals or items because of their high alertness and intelligence.
In general, German Shepherds are in the medium-large size category, with the average male at 24-26 inches tall and the average female at 22-24 inches. However, some dogs of this breed may be taller or shorter.
